Chevron Beads

Chevron Beads are special glass beads, originally made for New World trade and the slave trade in Africa by glassmakers in Italy and in the early 15th century. They consist of several layers of colored glass. The initial core is formed in a star-shaped mold, and can have anywhere between five and fifteen points. The next layer of glass conforms to the shape of the star. Several layers of glass can be applied (typically four to seven layers), or star-shaped or smooth. After all layers have been applied, the glass is driven with the desired thickness and when cooled, cut into short segments showing the configuration of the resulting star in the extremities. The ends can be ground to show the herringbone pattern. Chevron accounts are traditionally composed of red, blue and white layer, but modern chevrons can be found in any color combination. Original beads for transportation to the New World and Africa were generally composed of green, white, blue and red layers

Increasingly, dichroic glass beads used to produce a quality high art. Dichroic glass has a thin surface layer of molten glass, resulting in a surface which has a metallic sheen that changes between the two colors seen from different angles. Beads can be pressed, or made with traditional techniques lamps. The metal used was originally developed by NASA for the space program.

Other possible business accounts accounts are made in Africa West, by and for Africans, such as accounts Kiffa in Mauritania, Ghana and Nigeria and the grains of powdered glass. Other accounts include the Tibetans ethnic brass beads and African Dzi measure. Rudraksha seeds are the accounts that are common in India for the manufacture of Buddhist and Hindu rosaries (bad). Magatama accounts are traditional Japanese, and cinnabar was often used for beads in China.
