What do i do after i Join SAG?

I had the opportunity to be a principle in a film over the summer of 2007. After i joined SAG and was very excited to live the life of Brad Pitt (haha just kidding) but i thought i would be able to find an agent. I have been searching for an agent for awhile now and have had no luck. I sent my resume and headshots to all the big agents and no answer. May it has to do with the WGA strike? Maybe it has to do with my short resume? I am only 20 years old and live right outside NYC in NJ. if you have any advice let me know.

Welcome! Becoming SAG definitely doesn't make your life easier, in fact, it can sometimes make it more difficult becuase all those non-union projects that you used to be able to get principal roles to help build your resume and get experience are no longer available to you. Just because you're SAG doesn't mean a director is all of a sudden going to want to represent you. There's so much more.

If you don't have much experience (which is what I take it you mean by having a short resume), that should be your goal along with getting some solid training. Check Backstage and Actors Access, there are frequently auditions for both union and non-union actors, even student films and shorts. Start auditioning for these, basically audition for anything you can.

Audition for plays as well. Since you're not Equity (don't join yet!!) you have more flexibility here. Get in a show. If you're not getting cast, consider doing a showcase. .

You're also going to have to really start thinking about this as a business and how to go about marketing yourself. Sign up for some classes not only for the training but for the networking opportunities.

Get postcards made. Go to, you can order a bunch at a time. Every time you have a show, showcase, screening, whatever, do a mass mailing of your picture postcards to agents to let them know and invite them. If you get a new project, send a postcard. Basically, send them out as much as you can so that they'r constantly seeing your face (without having to open a headshot/resume packet) and know that you're working. That's always attractive to an agent.

I know people have different opinions on this, but you might even consider doing some of those "pay to audition" workshops. Casting Directors will usually hold these and then let you do a monologue or cold reading and will give you feedback. They're usually advertised that they're not used for casting, but I can't imagine that if a CD saw someone they really like, they wouldn't call them. Get all the face time you can.

Start reading all you can about the business. Go to the Drama Bookstore on 40th near Times Square and just sit and read, soak it all up. The clerks there are very helpful and can suggest books for you.

FInally, don't get discouraged. If this is your first big mailing, don't expect a response. Just keep training and working and marketing and then in another 6 months do it again.
Also, forget about the big agencies for now, they are much harder to get. Start with the boutiques. Get a copy of the Ross Reports (also at the Bookstore, along with mailing labels) and research smaller agencies to send to.

Good luck!!
