What is the cheapest instant camera out there long-term?

I would love an instant camera, and I've been checking out the instax mini 7s, but the film seems fairly costly. I was wondering if there are any other options out there, and where they'd be cheaper in terms of both the cost of the camera and the cost of the film, since buying a really cheap camera that costs and arm and a leg for 10 shots seems fairly pointless to me.
Just to be clear I mean instant cameras, like polaroids, not digital cameras.

Thanks!
Sophie
none of the answers so far have really told me anything...I know they'll still be pricey, but what is the cheapest available?

Thanks

Hi Sophie,

While instant photography is an interesting niche market that offers some unique artistic and creative means of expression you have discovered its biggest drawback. It is very expensive compared to digital photography and every mistake costs enough to buy a beverage, snack or possibly a lottery ticket.

You have already found the most affordable Instant Film solution available because most companies that manufacture this type of film have stopped production of instant film. If you buy the Fuji film in bulk you can probably get fresh film for about U.S. $1.55 per exposure. The longstanding problem with Polaroid and similar type cameras has been the cost of the film combined with a relatively low "success rate".

Few users ever learned enough to achieve a high success rate with this type of camera so the cost per usable image becomes quite high. Typical users could often only get one good exposure out of four shots so using a camera with film at $1.55 per exposure makes the actual cost about $1.50 x 4 or about $6.20 per usable shot.

One of the reasons for the rapid acceptance of digital imaging is that digital technology has improved image quality to a level comparable to film while reducing the cost per exposure by 90% or more. It is now possible to buy memory cards that will hold 100 or more very high quality images for less than the cost of a pack of 10 exposure Fuji instant film and the images can be reviewed immediately, rejects can be removed easily and the "keepers" can be copied to a computer so the card can be reused dozens or even hundreds of times.

Hope that helps. Email me if you would like more details.

P.S. "Instamatic" is the trademark name of Kodak cartridge loading film cameras that originally used 126 film size and later the "Pocket" models that used 110 size film cartridges. These cameras DID NOT provide instant pictures, the film had to be processed by a photo lab.
